Land Mind Design: Lessons from young Hispanic Entrepreneurs

Recently we’ve been reading a lot about how this is the worst job market for college grads in decades. While we do not doubt the statistical accuracy of these stories, I recently came across a Hispanic-owned Design start up that is proving that with hard work and vision any time is a good time to own your own business coming out of college.

Mauricio Urquilla and Leslie de Leon, recent graduates from Cal State Northridge, are Partners in Land Mind Design, an L.A. based graphic design shop that credits its success and rapid growth to the importance of networking, building connections and learning from colleagues. These insights show that these young Latino entrepreneurs already get what takes many of us years to learn. With less than two years in business, Land Mind Design has already started collecting international recognition when in 2009 the agency received an Honorable Mention from the prestigious London International Creative Competition.

Mauricio and Leslie believe that “Art makes a valuable impression" and this approach to design is a big part of their early success. For other Hispanic entrepreneurs and business owners their story is inspirational indeed. There’s also of course the education-success connection which I talked about earlier in this blog (and which President Obama pointed during his speech last year at the US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce conference). Land Mind Design is great case study of what can happen when young Latinos/as earn a great education and follow with entrepreneurial vision.

Here are Mauricio and Leslie talking about their shop and business approach:

Small business

Often we forget the little guy, the SMB, in our discussions of the comings and goings of the Internet marketing industry. Sure there are times like this when a report surfaces talking about their issues and concerns but, for the most part, we like to talk about big brands and how they do the Internet marketing thing well or not so well.

The Center for Media Research has released a study by Vertical Response that shows just where many of these ‘Main Street’ players are going with their online dollars. The big winners: e-mail and social media. With only 3.8% of small business folks NOT planning on using e-mail marketing and with social media carrying the perception of being free (which they so rudely discover it is far from free) this should make some in the banner and search crowd a little wary.

www.onlineuniversalwork.com
Small business, are you refering to the Easynet Connect Survey?
I read about it, very interesting. According to this survey, small businesses see the Internet as key to boosting their profiles and unlocking new revenue opportunities. Indeed the most important benefit that small companies can take from internet it is increase the number of people who know them; consequently, increase the amount of customers.
